Two years into their three year partnership, automotive challenger brand CUPRA and Primavera Sound joined forces at the iconic, long-anticipated Primavera music festival in Barcelona last weekend, seeking to inspire a new generation of music fans with transformative sonic experiences.
Mirroring the Primavera’s overarching theme of forward-thinking innovation, the partnership aligns with the launch of CUPRA Born; the company’s first 100% electric model, which was unveiled at the Impulse event in Terramar (Sitges) running in parallel with the festival's second week.
Following a two year hiatus, the festival promised to be the biggest and most ambitious in its history — boasting almost double the number of attendees, headliners and duration. From transformative performances from high-calibre artists, to an unparalleled euphoric atmosphere, Primavera 2022 triumphantly over-delivered on all accounts. To further bring attendees in on the action, CUPRA also opened a temporary Primavera radio studio — which broadcasted exclusive interviews with headlining artists and insider insights from organisers.
Sponsored by CUPRA, WAVE were invited to attend this year's event. We kicked off with an explosive set from seminal electronic group — and previous WAVE cover stars — Gorillaz, followed by an ominous, genre-defying performance from Atlanta rapper Playboy Carti at the CUPRA amphitheatre stage.
To the backdrop of the setting Barcelona sun, we wrapped up the day with none other than electronic duo Bicep, who drew an extensive crowd for their high-energy closing set.
The following day was an eclectic mishmash of neo-soul, R&B and Afrobeats, with seamless performances from artists Jorja Smith and Giveon, who — alongside highlights from their acclaimed discographies — graced us with two unreleased songs.
Oozing with swagger, Burna Boy rocked the crowd with his catalogue of irresistible summer bangers and house party classics. On our musical journey from West to South Africa, we ended the day with a killer set from Amapiano DJ Black Coffee — who kept the already buzzing crowd grooving through the night.
June 11th saw rap superstar Megan Thee Stallion don the stage, captivating fans with her sumptuously audacious stage presence and catapulting the crowd into dance-mode with her signature ‘hot girl summer’ anthems. Cultivating a different atmosphere (but bringing all the more energy to the stage) was 2020’s WAVE cover star Celeste — who soothed us with soulful-yet-powerful renditions from her critically-acclaimed debut studio album.
Our incredible Primavera experience ended on a high, with an eclectic set from drum ‘n bass/trance DJ Goldie. A suitable end to a landmark festival experience.
