INTERVIEW WITH MATTHIEU MENU, DIRECTOR OF THE DOCUMENTARY INSIDE THE DREAM: MUGLER

What did you enjoy about this 18-month immersion at the heart of the Mugler house?

What truly captivated me throughout this project was the strong passion that drives everyone working at Mugler. Measuring the weight of its history, diving into its incredibly rich heritage, and immersing myself in its reinvention were also particularly memorable moments. The way Mugler's heritage is respected and revitalized by Casey Cadwallader, the current Creative Director of fashion, and his teams is fascinating. I was equally surprised by the incredible work done on the perfume, with everyone's determination to maintain a very avant-garde vision.

How would you define the Mugler house? And how did you capture its very specific essence and culture?

Born from the legacy of its founder Manfred Thierry Mugler, the house is a breeding ground for groundbreaking innovations and visionary audacity. Deeply rooted in a resolutely modern heritage, fashion and perfume coexist and complement each other within the house. The close collaboration with Casey Cadwallader and Danièle Lahana-Aidenbaum, president of Mugler Fashion & Perfumes, was essential to unveil the intimate backstage of creation and present it in its deepest reality, as well as the freedom given to us by the teams.

The Mugler house is celebrating 50 years of creation this year. What were the major challenges in capturing 5 decades of history in 60 minutes? Condensing 50 years of creation into one hour was an immense challenge. First, where to start and where to end?

Connecting the past to the present without losing narrative coherence required intense reflection and great editorial sensitivity. We wanted each minute to be a faithful homage to the heritage, but also a new and contemporary perspective on what Mugler represents today through Casey's vision.

Your previous films explored unique craftsmanship with precision. This new project immerses the viewer in the heart of creating a fashion show, up to the development of a perfume. How is this different from the previous behind-the-scenes you observed?

This project stands out for its immersive and emotional approach. Plunging the viewer into the heart of the conception to the realization of a fashion show or a new perfume invites them to experience the tension, passion, and creativity that drive all stages of the process. In this film, we move from one universe to another with a strong guiding thread that reflects the daily life of the teams. This documentary reveals human stories, interactions, and moments of pure inspiration that emerge through each new project.

Were there any moments or events that stood out to you during the filming?

Many moments stood out to me, for example, the palpable tension and excitement in the few minutes before the start of the Spring-Summer 2024 show. I hope viewers can feel it as if they were backstage with us. Another major moment is probably the special project with actress, Zendaya. These images embody both the past and present of the Mugler House. As an icon of a new generation, she is about to wear one of the most memorable pieces in fashion history, the Robot look from 1995, for the release of a current blockbuster, Dune II. It is the perfect symbol of a vibrant link between the past and the present.
